Africa Comes to Life in Disney Kingdom

Excerpt from a travel feature by Jackie Craven

Animal Kingdom Photo by Jackie Craven One balmy night before the first Disney Animal Kingdom opened, designer Joe Rohde and five members of his Imagineering team slipped past the security guards and set up camp on the lion rocks at the Walt Disney World theme park in Florida.  

They wanted to experience the African landscape they had recreated before the tourists arrived.  So, they rolled out their sleeping bags, nibbled strawberries and listened to the roars and rumblings of lions, elephants and other wild creatures.  (Most of the larger animals were secured in "night houses" at the edge of the park.)  

As the sun sank below the gnarled branches of an imitation baobab tree...
