At sunset, when passengers gathered on the Palaverdeck for cocktails with the captain, I watched the tossing waves and wished I had a compass. Surely we had passed this way several times since we set sail, but now the land that bobbed on the horizon was a strange and ghostly blur. Swaying with the rocking of our boat, I called out to my friends, "What island is that?" "Gomera," said James, an Englishman and a veteran yachtsman. "Tenerife," disagreed one of the Germans. A young woman from Switzerland wondered if we could have circled all the way back to Gran Canaria. The
scent of roasted lamb drifted up from the dining room. Martin, the ruddy-faced
musician, beamed over his accordion and began to play, "My bonnie lies
over the ocean"
