Relaxing
in the unexpected luxury of a Mercedes Benz taxi, we asked our driver
to show us the important sites of Limassol.
It was our first night in Cyprus. We hoped that the taxi would
transport us to moonlit museums, medieval castles, or ruins of the ancient
Greek civilization that once flourished here. But as we cruised past mile
after mile of posh beachside resorts, our driver exclaimed, "There!"
Overhead, in the luminous Mediterranean sky, a bright neon sign read, "Hotel Hawaii." Our driver was so proud, my companion and I didn't have the heart to complain.
