Nice, France: Modern artists find pure light, perfect color in the French Riviera Excerpt from a travel feature by Jackie Craven |
In
a handbag shop on rue Pairoliere in Old Town Nice, we searched for the
perfect red.
The pocketbooks hung from racks in glittering clusters like candied fruit. With the scents of leather, plastic, and spices swirling around us, we stood in the open doorway and pondered. "How's this?" we called to a member of our group who had wandered across the narrow road to an olive shop. "Is it red enough? Or does it take itself too seriously?" Nice is, after all, a happy city, both elegant and relaxed, where grand old Belle Epoque hotels resemble ice cream sundaes, laundry flaps from wrought-iron balconies, topless sunbathers bask on public beaches, and the best colors - as seen in the jewel-bright paintings of Matisse and Chagall - do not take themselves too seriously...
