Cosmopolitan Island Seeks Its Cultural Soul

art in Puerto Rico - Photo by Jackie CravenIt was happy hour at the Wyndham El San Juan Hotel.  We sat on tapestry chairs, tapping our toes to salsa tunes and listening to the ping of slot machines that jingled from the glittering doorway to the casino. The enormous crystal chandelier over the mahogany wine bar seemed to dip and sway with the music, and, like a spinning doll on a jewelry box, a kimono-clad woman  glided across the rose marble floor and stopped before us with a sudden, somewhat jerky, bow.
 

"Sushi?" she asked. 

Puerto Rican sushi?  Served by a Korean woman named Kwicha?  Why not!

My friends and I had come to Puerto Rico to feast on native culture and cuisine, but we quickly learned to relish the quirky international flavor of the island...
