I’m not sure which thrilled me more: Receiving an honorable mention in the 2016 River Styx International Poetry Competition, or opening my email to find the congratulatory message from poetry editor Francesca Bell, whose raw, unflinching work I’d been following with admiration. (Check out “Severance” from The Literary Underground.)
Launched in the early 1970s, River Styx is an award-winning biannual published in St. Louis. Writing published in River Styx has a great track record of being selected for the Pushcart Prize, Best American Poetry, and Best New Poets. I’m awed to find myself sharing pages in River Styx 97 with amazing writers like Elton Glaser, David Wagoner, and Carol Potter.
